Connecticut Tire Regulations

A tire must have two-thirty-seconds of an inch (2/32") center tread.

For drivers in Connecticut and elsewhere in the Northeast, snow tires provide an essential aid for around safely during the winter months. Connecticut has specific rules that govern the use of snow tires; failure to follow those rules could mean a ticket for a driver who disregards the law.

Connecticut drivers can leave regular snow tires---without traction-grabbing studs attached---on their vehicles year-round, although most people only run them during the winter months anyway. A snow tire creates much more noise than a regular radial.

Many drivers have small metal studs mounted on their snow tires, which improve their traction even more. As of 2010, Connecticut state law allows studded tires from November 15 through April 30 only. The same date restrictions also apply to snow chains placed on tires.

Connecticut state law governing studs and chains on tires allows exemptions specifically for authorized emergency vehicles, constructions vehicles and tractors used to access agricultural land.

Connecticut charges drivers who use studs or chains with snow tires at any time except when allowed by law with an infraction the first time, with no fine assessed. A second violation, however, means a fine of up to $200.
