Washington Frost Laws, Seasonal Load Weight and Speed Restrictions – 2024

Frost law, spring road restrictions for 2024.

WSDOT may impose load and speed restrictions when freeze-thawing or other conditions subject the roadway to damage from regular traffic.

"WB I-82, mileposts 32-33. Lane closures may occur anytime outside 11 am-7 pm, Monday through Thursday, and 7 am-7 pm Friday. EB and WB shoulder closures may occur at any time."

• Emergency Load Restrictions - Applied to any road when the untreated pavement layers (base course and sub‑grade) are supersaturated and unstable.

• Severe Emergency Load Restriction—These are applied only to roadways whose surfacing depth is insufficient to resist subgrade swell pressure or surfaced with a thin bituminous treatment. When restrictions must be imposed, post the road with appropriate signs, notify Commercial Vehicle Services, and provide courtesy notices to principal road users as circumstances allow.
